A crowd of around 500 locals gathered in front of Suan Luang R.9, Phuket yesterday 16th Aug 2012, to protest against a new Tesco Lotus to be opened in Phuket Town. The crowd included members of the Phuket Merchants Association, Phuket Chamber of Commerce, 6 clubs in the Municipality of Phuket, 18 in urban communities, community pharmacies in Phuket and more.
The crowd which was made up of pedestrians, autocades and motorcycles with placards featuring slogans such as “Lotus is the way to community breakdowns”, “Phuket doesn’t want Lotus in the City”, “Lotus’ life but the local’s death” amongst others. The protesters marched down Bangkok Road, the proposed site of the Tesco Lotus, and finished at Phuket Town Hall, where a petition was handed over to Phuket’s Governor by Mr.Prasad Boontantrapi.
Mr.Prasad said “This demonstration is so that Phuket’s people can express their opinion, and we will continue to demonstrate in a disciplined manner. It is not our intention to make any trouble for the general public. I know Lotus is in the process of preparation, building regulations and I will try my best not to allow Lotus to have a store here in Phuket Town.”
Mr.Theerapong Eamarnan, President of Phuket Municipalities bazaar 1 said “If we have a large retailer in the city it will be cause major impact to the livelihood of our small shops that will lose out, and the result will worsen the lives of thousands in Phuket Town.”
