On 11th September 2012, Vice President of Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (PPAO) – Mr.Soratham Jinda launched a volunteer training program “LIFEGUARD 2012”.
The objective of the training is for civilians to assist in monitoring and identifying people in trouble in beach areas. The training was a joint venture between PPAO, Phuket Lifeguard Club and Navy Region 3’s 8th Marine Police.
“LIFEGUARD 2012” provided training for helping victims in the water and basic life saving.
The training has five sessions, the first was on 10th September 2012 at the Phuket Air Traffic Control Centre swimming pool, the second is from 11th – 14th September 2012 at Dinar Lodge Hotel and a field training at BangTao beach, which it is hoped will see around 65 beach masseurs and merchant being trained.
This project was supported by experts Navy Region 3’s 8th Marine Police, Phuket Lifeguard Club and Surf Life Saving Association of Australia.
PPAO now has 33 lifeguards at a time, located on 13 beaches, with a total 106 people. From January – August 2012 (8 months) it is believed they have saved 674 lives.
