Phuket’s remaining illegal taxis to be targetedOn 15th October 2012 at Phuket City Hall, Vice Governor of Phuket – Mr.Jamroen Thippayapongthada presided over a meeting ‘Practice of Phuket Taxi Drivers 3/2012″. Also in attendance at the meeting were Mr.Theerayut Prasertpol of Phuket Transport Department, Mr.Prateung Sornkhum – TAT Office Phuket, Police General Sakchai Limchareun – Phuket Provincial Police Deputy Commander and relevant agencies.

Mr.Jamroen said “We now have a policy where taxi drivers have to advise passengers of the price of a journey prior to the journey commencing. We have also asked the relevant agencies to take care of the tourists and ensure they are protected against illegal taxi service providers.”

Mr.Theerayut said “We have now registered 3,594 of what were previously illegal taxis, 2,800 of those have been approved and it is estimated the remaining ones will be fully approved in 180 days. After the process is complete we will not tolerate illegal taxis in Phuket any longer, and a team will be sent to inspect the island to see if there are still any in operation, and the necessary action will be taken against those who still operate illegally.”
