On November 18th, Maj. Gen. Jamlong Koonsong, the Deputy Commander of Royal Thai Army region 4, presided over the opening ceremony of ‘Vetiver Grass Planting and Weir Construction (royal projects) Demonstrating Center’ located at the old Chao Fah Mine.
This center was established with the participation of the Royal Thai Army Region 4, Internal Security Operation Command Region 4, and Bangkok Hospital Phuket. The 25 rai of land used to construct the center was donated by Anuphas Group with 40,000 vetiver grass stems from Phuket City Municipality. The center aims to be a learning source and to solve water shortages in Phuket.
Dr. Kongkiat Kespechara, the Director of Bangkok Hospital Phuket, said that Phuket faced water shortages every year; therefore we should use the royal suggestions of His Majesty the King in water management to solve the problems. Weir construction and Vetiver Grass planting could reduce landslides and water current speed, as well as keep more water in the ground instead of letting it flow to the sea.
In September, the hospital and Prince of Songkhla University, Phuket Campus, built the first weir behind the university to be a model in water management. This gave the university and nearby community some more water all year round. He said that this center would help lead to sustainable water management in Phuket.
