Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation hosted an event releasing 30 little sea turtles into the sea. The event was supported by the Third Naval Command Area. There were a lot of tourists and local residents who joined the event. People who wanted to release a turtle paid 3,000 baht to do so. The money, 590,000 baht, generated from the event will be given to Phuket Marine Biological Centre to use in marine life conservation.
Moreover, there was a walk rally promoting “Turtle Conservation” as well. The walk rally started at Pru-Jeh-san Lake and finished at the beach in front of JW Marriott Phuket. The participants had to search for clues to win the game. Each clue contained information about sea turtles, so the participants could know more about turtle’s lives.
Previously, there were a lot of sea turtles coming to lay their eggs on the beach of Mai Khao. However, after being hit by the tsunami, overfishing and pollution, the number of the turtle nests decreased. To save the turtles, everybody has to adhere to a conservation process, such as not leaving rubbish on the beach or sea, as some plastic is harmful to turtles; also do not disturb the turtles while they are laying their eggs. Now the foundation has been working seriously with the Third Naval Command Area and Phuket Marine Biological Center to conserve the turtles.
