Their annual sea turtle conserving activities were held along the hotel’s beach on April 2nd, 2010, at Sheraton Grand Laguna Hotel, one of the hotels run by Laguna Group Phuket. The activities featured an exhibition of sea turtles’ life cycle, sea turtle-shaped sand sculptures competition, games and souvenir booths.
The event attracted a lot of interest from both foreigners and locals. In the event, Laguna Goup handed over 338,800 baht of income from their previous year’s sea turtle conserving activities to the 3rd Naval Area and Marine and
Coastal Research and Development Center to use in sea turtle conservation. At the end of the event, 80 sea turtles were released back to the sea, 2 of them being green turtles. All turtles were fitted with Global Positioning System or GPS aerials on their shells. The GPS signals will help researchers to better follow and study the turtles’ behaviors while they are in the sea.
