Phuket, Thailand – January 2011 – The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation, in conjunction with JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, Anantara Phuket Villas, Sala Phuket Resort & Spa, and Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa will hold Turtle Release “New Year New Life” on Chinese New Year, February 4th, 2011, to raise funds and awareness for the plight of the critically endangered Sea Turtles in Phuket.

The objectives of the event are not only giving baby turtles a new start, but also bring back life to injured turtles. The funds raised from this event will be separated to support the Hatchery Program by Royal Thai Navy and also the Injured Turtles Rehabilitation program, which is been taken care of by the Phuket Marine Biological Center.

Today, sea turtles face numerous threats. Commercial fishing activities kill thousands each year. Many sea turtles die from eating or becoming entangled in plastic debris that litter the oceans. Rubbish, particularly plastic bags that end up in the sea, are often mistaken as food by sea turtles. Leatherbacks, the largest of the world’s sea turtles, are particularly susceptible to confusing plastic bags with jellyfish – the main component of their diet.

During the breeding season from November to February, sea turtles, particularly the giant leatherback, return to the beach they were born on to lay their eggs.  Their numbers have been severely depleted over the last six years since the tsunami and the local Mai Khao villagers, together with Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation, Phuket Marine Biological Center and Royal Thai Navy work very hard to protect these magnificent reptiles.

As the future of turtles nesting on Mai Khao Beach looks somewhat bleak, more than we have done in the past needs to be done. Protecting their nesting area and minimizing man-made threats may result in the turtles returning to nest on Phuket’s longest, most natural beach.

The walk Rally will take place from Pru-Jeh-san Lake, Mai Khao to JW Marriott Phuket.  Registration starts at 15.30pm followed by the walk rally.  The distance will be 1 km respectively.  A Fun game with RC searched will be positioned every 200 meters on the beach and will be open to all participants.  Great prizes, turtles to release and dinner vouchers to be won!
