Phuket, Thailand – December 2009 – In 12th December, The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation in conjunction with following organizations; JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, Marriott’s Phuket Beach Club, Marine and Coastal Conservation Center 5 (Phuket), Rajabhat University, Mai Khao District Administration, schools in Mai Khao district and the community are organizing the Beach and Reef clean up as a part of “Turtle Conservation Plan in Mai Khao area”. The Beach & Reef Clean Up starts from 8:00am at Mai Khao Village Soi 6 – 8 and near the Tsunami Warning Tower.
Beach Clean Up
There will be over 100 students from 5 schools in Mai Khao District attend beach clean up together with teachers and other volunteers from hotels and communities. It takes place at Mai Khao beach (1.4 kilometers long), community number 4 on 12th December 2009. You will learn about the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources and ICC data card that stored the information of waste along the Coast. Every student will enjoy themselves created their own poster from the collected waste and create their own story “how the waste impacts our nature”.
Reef Clean Up
Reef Clean up is conducting by the Sea Bees and Marine and Coastal Conservation Center 5 (Phuket) together with Royal Navy, Sirinath Nation Park to clean up the coral reef in front of Mai Khao beach. The coral reef was damaged from the waste especially from the fishery equipments. This is one of the activities from Turtle Conservation Plan in Mai Khao area that responsible by Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation. We aim to clean up the Reef & Beach as we hope the marine turtle will come back to lay egg on Mai Khao beach in the nesting season during November – April.
