As of 25th August 2012, Phuket will seek to change its management system to a self-managed /free state. On 3rd April 1993 a project was proposed to rename Phuket as Phuket City. And in 1997 Asst.Prof.Wutthichai Tanchai together with a team from Thammasat University carried out research to gain information and opinions of Phuket’s residents.
Mr.Chanwet Chokitsomboon, a representative from a group who want Phuket to be a self-managed province announced at a forum of the South Provinces of Thailand’s Reform of the General Assembly that his group wants to push forward for Phuket to be a self-managed province, which would have its own policies, administration board and Council of Residents.
Mr.Chanwet said “Phuket has no direction when it comes to development, it is not sustainable and it has difficulties solving its own problems. We now have many problems such as environmental issues, social problems, inefficient management, no strict law enforcement and no public involvement.”
Mrs.Wanee Pinprateep from Reform Organization said that there is now a self-managed province in the North, Chiang Mai and also in the Northeast, Amnart Jaroen. The Reform Organization will support Phuket to be the self managed province of the south. To continue with the project there has to be a plan with clear goals. The Reform Organization will push to develop an approach to support the expectations of Phuket’s people.
