Recently, at Phuket International Airport, Mr.Sintop Sirisingh, Deputy Head of ETA Department, made a statement to the Senate Committee on Transport and Communications on the progress of the Patong Tunnel project.
As of 20th Mar 2012, at a cabinet meeting held in Phuket, the principle of the Patong Tunnel Project, aimed at solving Phuket’s traffic problem, was agreed at a of budget 5,556.04 million baht. At the meeting, the cabinet instructed the Ministry of Transport, together with Patong Municipality, to consider the feasibility of the project, to look at what percentage of local funds would be contributed towards the construction of the tunnel and also what the tariff would be to pass through the tunnel.
Mr.Sintop said “We have now completed the feasibility study and have checked the engineering plans & design, relevant expenses and environmental impact, and can announce that the project will start in the 2013 fiscal year, with an aim to open the tunnel 2018. All relevant organizations are 100% behind this project.”
