On August 20th 2012 at Phuket Town Hall, Phuket Vice Governor Dr.Sommai Prechasil and Head of Phuket Provincial Governor’s Office Mr.Prajead Augsornthammakul welcomed Mr.Paiboon Changreang from the Thai National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), who came to be part of a meeting to discuss Phuket’s plans for development in the next 38 years from 2012-2050.
Mr.Paiboon said that in the year 2015, the 10 member countries of ASEAN namely; Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Brunei will integrate into a single community which will together share the same 3 visions:
1. Policy and Security of the ASEAN Community.
2. The ASEAN as an economic community.
3. ASEAN as a Socio-Cultural Community.
Phuket, which has an area of 513,115 square kilometers and population of approximately 64 million people, will in 2015 expand to the 10 regions of ASEAN, which has a total area of approximately 4,435,570 square kilometers and a population of around 590 million people.
Phuket must seek knowledge about various aspects such as the market and production base of the community and making sure they match those of other areas. It also needs to focus on economic integration, free movement of goods, services, investment and labor and ensuring its capital flows more freely. And also reduce the development gap, promote the development of human resources through education, collaboration, and learning throughout life.
All of the above requires research of current data and Phuket requires a faculty advisor to research the data and make plans for its development in the next 38 years. If the City Development Plan is done well, it will lead to the creation of vision and will ensure Phuket achieves its strategic goals.
