On 28th August 2013, Phuket Fishing Port Manager – Pramual Rakjai meet with Phuket Vice Governor – Somkiat Sungkhaosutthirak to discuss a project which aims to make to make Phuket into a tuna fishing hub. It is believed that Phuket would be the ideal tuna fishing hub because seafood and tourism are clearly linked.
Khun Pramual said “If Phuket Fishing Port is turned into a tuna fishing hub, it could also become a tourist attraction. Phuket currently exports more than 4000 of tuna each year and this could be increased further should the project work. Phuket could well be the main tuna fishing hub in the region in the future.”
Khun Somkiat said “The concept to push and develop Phuket Fishing Port to be tuna fishing hub is particularly interesting, the area is already prepared in many respects and it could also increase the island’s tourism revenue. We will set up a committee to invite all those involved to come and discuss the idea and troubleshoot any problems which may be faced.”
