On December 12th 2012 at the Centara Karon Resort Phuket, Mr.Yuthipong Jarasatien – Deputy Minister of Agriculture presided over the “International Tripartite Rubber Council” (ITRC) . The meeting was a organized by International Rubber Organization (IRCo), Indonesia’s Minister of Trade – Mr.Gita Wirjawan Irjawan, Malaysia’s Minister for Industrial Crops and Commodities – Mr. Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, representatives from Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The meeting was also attended and observed by General of the Department of Agriculture – Mr.Damrong Jirasuthat and relevant authorities.
The meeting was arranged to discuss about measures which can be taken to stabilize and track the price of rubber in the region and to introduce integration work to solve the problem with the decline in rubber prices. This would include monitoring operations and plans for the next 10 years (year 2012-2021).
Mr.Yuthipong said “A conclusion has been reached to control the export quota and to hold the price at U.S. $ 3 per kg. Each country will now have to keep a record of the number of old trees felled and the number of new trees planted. As for Thailand, we will now use rubber to make roads instead of Asphalt. The Highway Department has been studying this issue for some time and has found that it is possible. Meanwhile, as for Malaysia and Indonesia, it has been agreed that they should focus on rubber’s green technology and reducing global warming.”
