Chanwoot Hongyok, the General Manager of Phuket Country Club, a golf course located in Kathu, said that tourism in Phuket tended to be better because the island had many tourist attractions, local people who were always welcoming for their visitors, plus better food and security compared to other countries in the same region. This was good for the golf market in the island. However, every sector had to follow up the political situation since it directly affected the island’s tourism.
He added that he had attended the international golf summit held in Bangkok recently. There were representatives from over 300 golf courses in Asia attending the event. There was a talk about the capacity and readiness to welcome more tourists on golf courses in Asia. Compared to others, Thailand, especially Phuket, had high potential in golf markets since the island was well known for its beaches and had at least five high standard golf courses.
This offered the tourists good golf and other pleasure trips at the same time. Chanwoot added that Indian golfers were an interesting market. For this group and other groups of tourists, they need to be assured that Phuket was safe from the political crisis in Bangkok. He then asked the government to help the golf course entrepreneurs more since they are facing many problems, especially the very high rate of golf course tax.
