Born, raised and educated in “The Pearl of the Andaman” Suphattra Juruariyanon (Nid) is Managing Director of Patong’s newest hotel, The Nap Patong. Surprisingly for someone involved within the hotel industry, at such a high level, Nid was not actually educated within the hotel industry. She studied and gained a Bachelors Degree in Mass Communication at Ramkhumhaeng University.
So you may be wondering how a lady who gained a degree in Mass Communication became involved in the hotel industry. Well the answer to that question is quite a simple one. Just over 10 years ago, Nid’s husband, who is one of the islands most successful building contractors, set up Patong’s Thai themed Salathai Resort. Prior to the resort being built Nid had no knowledge about the hotel industry whatsoever. However, due to the fact that this was to be a family business Nid became involved in the resorts operations and has developed herself day by day to get her to the position she is in today. She commented that she is continually striving to learn new things regarding work and life in general.
Although Nid is very confident and positive about how she has developed herself she sometimes finds her appointment as Managing Director a huge challenge with a high level of responsibility. She often finds the task of taking good care of her guests and staff at the same time a difficult one, but one, I’m sure you will agree if you visit the resort, she is doing a very good job of.
The Nap Patong’s sense of design was created under the minimalist concept “less is more.” Nid explains that a piece of decoration may be used in order to make guests feel comfortable along with giving the hotel a feeling of contemporary chicness & simplicity. This is very much the case with the hotels restaurant 76 Bar Drink & Dine which is decorated with rubber trees and turtles which is both meaningful to Phuket culture but adapted to modern life.
The design and location of The Nap are both consistent with modern life with the concept including maintaining a natural environment. The Nap’s signature spa “Nam Spa” selects and uses only natural and eco-friendly products.
Due to the fact that new technology is a part of modern life, The Nap Patong realises the importance this plays with the hotel and therefore The Nap Patong has set up free high speed Wi-Fi internet all around the hotel meaning that every guest can be connected to the internet wherever they are in the hotel. Moreover, Mac mini computers are ready to serve guests at their Tao Kra library and iPads, Apple TV’s and iMacs are provided in the hotel and room facilities.
Asked what she saw for the future of the tourism industry in Phuket and Patong, Knit commented “Nowadays, more tourists are trying to find something new for themselves and also require somewhere where new technology is supported and useful information is easily accessible. This is especially the case with Patong. This is due to the fact that Phuket is a very well known tourist destination where all tourists want to experience a once in a lifetime experience.”
The average day for MD of a hotel or resort is a very hectic and no one day is the same as the next. However, Nid feels the most important part of her job is to find and make comments about the weak points of the hotel’s service and find ways to make them better. This is also the case for the hotel in general as Nid wants to ensure that they always keep to the hotel’s concept and continue to develop their product and ensure the customer’s needs are always going to be met.
Due to the fact that Nid is MD of a hotel, we were curious to know whether she would make a comment to another hotel’s management, if she was visiting there as a guest, and was unhappy with any aspect of her stay there. When we asked her about this her reply was “If I visit other hotels as a guest I always try to find new things to help in developing the hotel’s potential rather than find faults or make a comment to others.”
Away from her busy business environment Nid tries to live an easy life. When she has spare time she likes to spend it either exercising or travelling with her family and sometimes photo shooting which is her favorite hobby.
We wish Nid every success with The Nap Patong and would like to thank her for taking time out to answer our questions.
