On 19th August 2013 at Phuket Provincial Hall, Khun Tawatchai Lausiri-Hongthong – Director of Traffic and Transport Development and Research Center (TDRC) of King Mongkut’s University of Technology, Thonburi led a management team from China Railway Group Limited and Sparro Assetcorp China to meet Phuket Governor – Maitree Intusut. At the meeting Khun Maitree was presented with details of how the visitor’s were prepared to invest in Phuket’s proposed monorail project which many say is needed to help to solve Phuket’s traffic problems.
Khun Tawatchai said “TDRC and Phuket have been studying about a monorail project since 2006. Phuket really needs a system such as the monorail to help solve some of the island’s traffic problem; congestion on the roads is getting worse each and every year. It has been proposed, as a guideline, that Phuket considers developing 7 monorail routes which would be:
1. Phuket Airport – Central Festival Phuket – Chalong Circle
2. Patong – Central Festival Phuket – Phuket City
3. Bangkok Intersection – Chalong Circle
4. Ta Rua Intersection – Patong
5. Patong – Chalong Circle
6. Chalong Circle – Kata
7. Highway Police Station – Ta Rua Intersection
“It has been agreed that Phuket needs to create a monorail system and the first routes that would need to be put in place are 1, 2 & 3.
“China Railway is ready to be involved in terms of technology. They have advised us that construction could be done both at ground level and underground (MRT), however if the project is to go ahead the preferred method would be decided beforehand. China Railways is considered as one of the leaders in this area and it has the Chinese Government as a shareholder. They have developed many monorail projects in the past which have included drilling tunnels; they have also developed projects in areas which have large numbers of residential properties. In addition, we are pleased to say that Sparro Assetscorp is ready to support with capital investment” he added.
