5,000 US sailors boost Phuket’s economyOn 28th May 2013, the US Navy Ship USS NIMITZ CVN 68 led by Rear Admiral Michael S White, along with its armed missile-cruiser escort the USS PRINCETON CG59, dropped anchor off of Phuket Deep Sea Port in Ao Makham. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is in Phuket to give shore leave for its 5000 sailors.

Micheal S White said “It’s great for us to be able to visit Phuket and it’s a great place for our sailors to be able to relax after being busy for some two and a half months off the coast of South Korea. It’s also a good opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the US and Thailand who have enjoyed a 180 year relationship. Phuket is a favorite destination for our sailors because of its natural beauty, the amazing culture and food.”

Phuket Tourist Association expects revenue from the visit to be in the region of 400 million baht.
