Phuket Music Festival started on sand with ska, sunset then stars

The festival kicked off on Friday night with a beautiful sunset, a nice breeze – blowing away any rain clouds, silky soft sand underfoot, a catchy ska reggae style band ‘Tamone’ on stage, a growing crowd of foreigners & Thais, glowing under a rising full moon, a grand opening with many of the stars on stage, then a pulsating ‘Mahajamruen’ band with a DJ and singer center stage.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)’s Director of Events, Vivatchai Bunyapak, & director of Southern Division, Bramet Amartlayakul, were there with Karon Muncipality Mayor, Tavee Thongchom, to see the start and open the festival.

TAT and Phuket province organised this festival on the sand pitch where the volleyball tournaments are played beside Karon beach & road, for two nights Friday June 25th and Saturday 26th June, to promote tourism in Phuket. Unfortunately there wasn’t much space for parking, so it was best to come as a passenger, by motorbike or walk quite a way, but it was worth seeing, like lasers in sync with lights, and hearing, if you like loud rhythmic trance dance & DJ tunes, all outdoors with a picnic on the beach, and loads of food & drink stalls nearby.

The Phuket Music Festival was a follow up of the ‘Roy Fest’ last year. But this year, it had more styles and sources of music. The concerts of various artists from different countries were free of charge.

The first band Tamone from Bangkok was apparently formed in 2000 at university with lead singer “Kim”. The second band Mahajamruen also from Bangkok was formed in 2006 with singer “Snare” & DJ “K”. The artists who were due later that night included DJs such as Agnelli & Nelson, Activa from England, Dr. Usui from Japan and popular artists from Thailand like Thanathorn.

The scheduled line up for Saturday was Jo Fax, 4gusm Band, Silly Zeal, Buddha Bless, DJ Suharit Siamwala and Spydamonkee all from Thailand, then Yoji from Japan and finally Dj B from Singapore.

Phuketindex went along again for part of the 2nd night to see the first three acts on stage:
Jo Fax was pop-ska style bouncy band led by Maprang on vocals;
4gusm or 4Gzm with singers Thep Chaturaphak & Mr Team had a variety of R&B & cover songs;
Silly Zeal was a combination of Black Head Feat, Zeal and Smile Buffalo singer Ten forming a powerful heavy rock band that got the big beach crowd really excited.
